The chronology and confession of their ill-fated escapade is related entirely through a series of transcripts, narrated by the four contrite kids, their parents, classmates, and Miss Rasmussen. Wisecracking Sam makes fun of Brenton but needs his help in playing chess by mail with his dad, who is serving in Iraq. It works out in the end, but that was just not right. Eventually, their secret causes conflict with the law.
The story is strange, the setting is unbeleiveable, the characters are wooden sterotypes and their behavior is unlikely. Gutman is a talented writer with dozens of children’s books to his credit, and his latest is a funny and thought-provoking tale that should appeal equally to boys and girls. The dynamics within the group are stressful as well. I read this book with my fifth-grader, and he loved it! It reminds me of myself because I always have wanted to have a machine to do my homework for me. I read the book for my book report and i loved it.
The children gradually begin to bond, especially after Sam’s father is killed in combat.
We both loved listening to this, and ended up talking quite a lot about the ethics homeowrk use of a homework machine. Nov 05, Mnmstaten rated it really liked it.

As long as they keep it a secret. I do think though that some of my sentences are a little too short. It worked out because they were getting interviewed while telling the whole story at the same time. The setting of the Grand Canyon and sub-themes about playing chess, starting fads, and using a catapult will get kids looking up gutnan information in books and on the Internet.
Brenton is super smart. Brenton, Snik, Kelsey, and Judy are in 5 th grade and summady only thing in common. Refresh and try again.
So this was one of those cases where I thought this was book was just okay, in that it dragged on for me by the middle and all the way through to the end. People who hate doing homework.

There are touches of humor in the way the four classmates talk about themselves and one another. I read it while I read other book to look do it connect.

Using an audio version to access the story did work well for this format, and saved me trying to make the voice of each character sound different if reading aloud. I like the character Snik. My 8 year old’s first real experience of more than one thhe in a book.
